In a bit of a departure from the adventure genre, Bloom will star as a British milkman who becomes a boxer in The Calcium Kid. December will see the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. 

 

Orlando Bloom may soon be known as the prince of the epic adventure flick, as he's set to co-star in the Wolfgang Petersen-directed, big-budget epic Troy, based on Homer's classic, The Iliad. The film also stars Brad Pitt as ancient hero Achilles, and is scheduled for release sometime in 2004.

US President Barack Obama pressed Afghan leader Hamid Karzai to show progress in cleaning up corruption and rallied troops to defeat the Taliban during a surprise night-time visit to Afghanistan.

Obama flew into Afghanistan under the cover of darkness aboard Air Force One and left before dawn Monday for his first visit to the country since taking office more than a year ago.

The war against the Taliban, now in its ninth year, is claiming record fatalities among the 121,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, where Obama is deploying reinforcements in an effort to bring the long war to an end.

The visit -- which included briefings with US General Stanley McChrystal, commander of foreign troops, and US ambassador Karl Eikenberry -- gave the president the chance to assess the progress of his new war strategy.

"We are here to help Afghans forge a hard-won peace while realising the extraordinary potential of the Afghan people," the US commander-in-chief said in a rousing speech to US and Nato troops at Bagram Airfield outside Kabul.

"We're going to deny al-Qaeda safe haven. We're going to reverse the Taliban's momentum," said Obama.

He pressed Karzai, returned for a second five-year term in fraud-riddled elections last year, to step up the fight against corruption and the drugs trade, and invited the Afghan leader to visit Washington on May 12.

Karzai has pledged action against corruption, which infects every aspect of life in Afghanistan, as well as good governance and rule of law.

Obama, whose relationship with Karzai has been strained, urged his Afghan counterpart to "continue to make progress" on all fronts.

The visit sent a clear message to Karzai that Obama expects him to act on promises to eradicate graft before visiting Washington but is deeply committed to reversing the Taliban insurgency, Afghan analysts said.

"Obama has set some homework for Karzai, reminding him that the anti-corruption issue must be taken more seriously and that not enough has been done so far," analyst Waheed Mujda told AFP.

The US president has put his personal stamp on what he calls a "war of necessity" in Afghanistan, ordering more than 50,000 extra troops to the country to bring the total foreign deployment to 150,000 by August.

"It was a strong message to President Karzai and his administration that the US cannot remain indifferent to the internal politics in Afghanistan," said Haroun Mir, director of Afghanistan's Centre for Research and Policy Studies.

Survivor's James Clement, Heroes vs. Villains meant no more Mr. Nice Guy in this week. The Villains blindsided Tyson Apostol in a very difficult Tribal Council, but for the Heroes, the selection was clearer because James Clement was playing injured. This morning, ET speaks to James to find out how he is doing after hurting his knee during a confront and requiring medical notice.

ET said how are you doing? Can you remember and talk about your injury?

James: I just dragged my ACL and my meniscus. I had to get operation right after the show, but amazing didn't cure right and I have to get operation again. but now I am okay, but they have to go back in there and fix something and figure out why it is not stand-in right.


ET: But your voice hasn't changed since previous seasons, when you came off as a nice guy. So what was different this time?

James: It's called editing! I love it. It's called TV, baby. It is amazing. I love everything reality—I watch Project Runway, I watch everything—you can't believe how they're being portrayed on TV. It's wonderful how people walk up to me and say, "You're being so mean." Really? I'm being mean because I'm saying let's work as a team? Come on. Obviously, that's just craziness.

But it hurt my mama's feelings. Poor thing. [She said:] "Oh, they're being mean to my baby. You look like you're crazy!" That's the thing that's upsetting about it. Besides that, I love it. 'Cause it's TV. I like the way they manipulate stuff in their own light. Honestly, in China I was waaay more aggressive, because it sucked in China. If you didn't work as a team, I kinda got on you. But they made it look like I was a great person, [while in Heroes vs. Villains] they made it seem like I was the evilest thing ever. Survivor gives and Survivor takes away.

ET said then it is perhaps an excellent craze that you went home when you did.

James: really, yeah, they kept me for myself because I didn't want to go home. I most likely would have run on the beach to show that I could run, and they perhaps would have kept me just about longer and I would have been messed up more. They helped me out. There's no telling what I would have messed up if I had stayed.

Alcott finished 11th in the downhill, the best Olympic performance by a British woman skier since the 1968 Winter Olympic Games. Alcott was disqualified from the combined event after the first slalom run because her skis were 0.2mm narrower than the FIS regulations allowed. She was 19th and 22nd in the super G and giant slalom.

Mountain hike: In June 2008, Alcott climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with fellow ski racers Jules Mancuso and Lauren Ross, and Alcott's boyfriend Mark Weaver. The climb raised $30,000 for international humanitarian organization Right To Play.

Angela Bassett as a superhero ball-buster? Sounds perfect. Bassett has accepted a role in the new Green Lantern movie, keeping tabs on the superheroes of Earth, and kicking ass in general. But her role is so much bigger than that.

Variety announced that Bassett will be playing the role of Amanda Waller, a very important figure in the DC Universe. Waller runs the government's Suicide Squad, a group of ex-supervillains who are sent on missions that they're not expected to survive. (Hence the name.) She also helps out with the secret spy organization, Checkmate, and sometimes the mysterious Project Cadmus. And she deals with the Justice League. Which means that not only is the character heavily connected, but that there might be some other DC Universe supers making a cameo down the line. After all, what's the point of throwing in Amanda Waller if you don't mention that she used to work with Lex Luthor? It's a thought, anyway.
